International audience; We study in this article the radiative heat transfer between two semi-infinite bodies at subwavelength scale. We show that this transfer can be enhanced by several orders of magnitude when the surfaces support resonant surface waves. In these conditions, we show that the transfer is almost monochromatic.

Applications of superhydrophobic (SHS) and lubricant infused surfaces (LIS) involve exposure to corrosive environments from the acidic to the basic, at a range of temperatures, that are not fully characterized. We present for the first time a multifactorial study of the effects of surface fabrication method, surface modification, surface functionalization time, temperature and pH of the immersion medium on the corrosion performance of nonwetting copper surfaces. Bioinspired SHS and LIS fabricated using facile methods of etching and electrodeposition are systematically assessed using potentiodynamic polarization measurements for their corrosion resistance in saline solution ( pH ≈ 7) over a temperature range 23–85 °C. SHS and LIS are shown to exhibit diminished corrosion rate, by up to two orders of magnitude, compared to bare copper surface. An Arrhenius model is developed for the first time, describing the temperature-dependent corrosion rate of SHS and LIS. Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy is used to show that corrosion resistance of LIS is larger by three orders of magnitude in extremely acidic ( pH = 1) and by an order magnitude in extremely alkaline ( pH = 14) media compared to bare copper surface. Etched LIS are generally more resistant to corrosion compared to SHS at all temperatures with excellent microstructural durability.

Schottky-contacted nanosensors have attracted extensive attention due to their high sensitivity and fast response time. In this article, we proved that the construction of Schottky contact by Pt nanoparticles (NPs) decoration can effectively improve the performance of V2O5 nanobelts photodetectors. After modified by Pt NPs, the photocurrent of V2O5 nanobelts is increased by more than two orders of magnitude, and the photoresponse speed is improved by at least three orders of magnitude. Detailed studies have shown that the performance enhancement is attributed to the formation of the Schottky contact at the electrode-semiconductor interface due to the decrease of surface gas adsorption and the increase of V2O5 work function after Pt NPs modification. The strong built-in field in the Schottky barrier region will quickly separate photogenerated carriers, thereby reducing the electron-hole recombination rate, resulting in the fast response time and an increase in the free carrier density. Moreover, it is found that this enhancement effect can be regulated by controlling the pressure to modulating the Schottky barrier height at the interface. Overall, the Pt NPs-modified V2O5 nanobelts photodetector exhibits a broad response spectrum (visible to near infrared), fast rise/fall response time (less than 6.12/6.15 ms), high responsivity (5.6 A/W), and high specific detectivity (6.9 × 108 Jones). This study demonstrates the feasibility of building a Schottky barrier to enhance the photodetection performance, which provides a general and effective strategy towards the construction and its practical application of supersensitive and fast-response nanosensors.

Droplet injection methods are widely used in the applications of microelectronic manufacturing, biological engineering, and 3-D printing. This work presents a new jet dispenser driven by a single piezoelectric stack that enables the capability of drop-on-demand patterning under a high working frequency (500 Hz). Due to the special designs of the jet dispenser, a broad range of liquids, whose viscosities span more than four orders of magnitude (21-665 320 cps), can be jetted. Moreover, a coupled Coulomb damping physical model is proposed, which includes an electromechanical and a dynamic model. Both the Coulomb and the fluid-solid damping are considered in the dynamic model. In order to validate the results obtained by using MATLAB/Simulink, the experiments were carried out. The injection performance of this jet dispenser has been tested by employing a self-made jetting platform. The minimum volume of a jetting droplet is about 14.4 nL with liquid wax. The error of volume uniformity among droplets does not exceed 8%, and the error of angle trajectory is about 0.17°. Furthermore, the versatility of the jet dispenser is demonstrated by printing liquid lubricant, food, glue, silver past, and a ceramic slurry in predefined patterns.

Solid acid composites of CsH2PO4/NaH2PO4/ZrO2 with different weight ratios of CsH2PO4 (CDP), NaH2PO4 (SDP), and ZrO2 were synthesized and characterized. The structure and morphology of the composites were investigated by XRD, FESEM, EDX, and FTIR techniques. The thermal stability and conduction were described for the solid acid composites using TGA, DTA, and conductivity measurements. NaH2PO4 increased the low-temperature conductivity of CDP by up to 1.5 orders of magnitude and ZrO2 enhanced the conductivity above the transition temperatures. Additionally, the composites showed excellent stability. The superprotonic transition behavior was identified at temperatures from 220 to 270 °C. The conductivity of the composites was examined in air and under confined conditions and also their decomposition was investigated. Our findings suggest that NaH2PO4/ZrO2 is an appropriate composite for achieving the high conductivity and stability of CDP.

Abstact H2 gas sensors for different applications require various detection ranges, such as 1–100 ppm for exhale breath test and 0–40000 ppm for H2 energy vehicles. Coarse-tuning of the detection range could be realized by the selection of the type of H2 sensors. The fine-tuning of the detection range within one type of H2 sensor, however, is little concerned and reported. Herein, we propose to achieve the fine-tuning of the H2 gas detection range of the AlGaN/GaN HEMT devices by adjusting the Pt gate thickness. Devices with various Pt gate thicknesses of 2, 20, 60, and 100 nm were fabricated and investigated. Results show that the HEMT devices have excellent pinch-off characteristic with an on-to-off ratio of ∼four orders of magnitude. For the 100 nm thick device exposed to 500 ppm H2, ultrafast response time of 1.5 s is observed together with high response. With the decrease of gate thickness, both the response and the response time gradually increase, 1850% and 6 s for the 2 nm thick device. Moreover, both the low limit of detection (LOD) and the saturation cencentration decrease from 1.6 to 0.14 ppm and from 30,000 to 5000 ppm, respectively, with the gate thickness reduced from 100 to 2 nm, revealing that fine-tuning of the detection range could be achieved by adjusting the gate thickness. Finally, the response activation energy is also studied, 15.9, 19.7, and 42.8 kJ/mol for 2, 60, and 100 nm thick devices, respectively.

Resistive switching (RS) has been studied for several applications such as information storage and bio-inspired computing, although reliability issues still prevent their massive use. In this work, we present a novel observation of trapping activity that imposes giant random conductance fluctuations, up to 3 orders of magnitude, resembling RTN in RS devices based on TiO2, HfO2 and hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN) under reading voltages (~ 0.1 V). These events appeared reproducible for all the aforementioned RS device types in sequential measurements and under different bias. This behavior is very beneficial to ensure recognition of the device’s two-state in applications such as stochastic computing integrated circuits (ICs).

In this work, a large-area MoS2/graphene barristor device, with an electrically tunable Schottky barrier height, has been studied for detection of various gaseous analytes. The Schottky barrier height could be modulated by over 0.65 eV, allowing the drain current to be tuned by many orders of magnitude. Using diluted NO2 and NH3 gases as analytes, the performance of the barristor device was compared with individual MoS2 and graphene based planar FETs, where the barristor device outperformed its counterparts in terms of response magnitude and limit of detection. Due to the atomically thin nature of MoS2 and graphene, electric field applied to one material could not be fully screened from the other one, which allowed both materials to act as a composite structure when analyte molecules interacted with the barristor device. This apparently reversed the dopant behavior of NO2 and NH3, while increasing the device sensitivity through subthreshold operation. Both conductance and capacitance based measurements are presented to highlight the charge transfer and barrier height modulation, to support the unique sensing mechanism observed in the 2D barristor device. A lower limit of detection in low ppb is established for NO2 and low ppm for NH3, which could be further tuned by altering gate-drain bias conditions.

Vapor transport method has been successfully used to synthesize high quality VO2 thin films on SiO2/Si substrate using V2O5 as a precursor in an inert-gas environment. The morphological and structural evolutions of the intermediate phases during the nucleation and growth processes were investigated by SEM and Raman spectroscopy, respectively. The results showed that the conversion of V2O5 powder to VO2 thin films was dominated by a melting-evaporation-nucleation-growth mechanism. Further characterization results demonstrated that the high quality crystals of monoclinic VO2 thin films exhibit a sharp resistance change up to 4 orders of magnitude. In addition, the VO2 thin films exhibited good near-infrared response, high stability, and reproducibility under ambient conditions, which should be promising for sensitive near-infrared detection. Our work not only provided a simple and direct approach to synthesize high quality VO2 thin films with distinct phase transition properties but also demonstrated the possible infrared sensing application in the future.

Currently, owing to the single-molecule-level sensitivity and highly informative spectroscopic characteristics, surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) is regarded as the most direct and effective detection technique. However, SERS still faces several challenges in its practical applications, such as the complex matrix interferences, and low sensitivity to the molecules of intrinsic small cross-sections or weak affinity to the surface of metals. Here, we show an enrichment-typed sensing strategy with both excellent selectivity and ultrahigh detection sensitivity based on a powerful porous composite material, called mesoporous nanosponge. The nanosponge consists of porous β-cyclodextrin polymers immobilized with magnetic NPs, demonstrating remarkable capability of effective and fast removal of organic micropollutants, e.g., ~90% removal efficiency within ~1 min, and an enrichment factor up to ~103. By means of this current enrichment strategy, the limit of detection for typical organic pollutants can be significantly improved by 2~3 orders of magnitude. Consequently, the current enrichment strategy is proved to be applicable in a variety of fields for portable and fast detection, such as Raman and fluorescent sensing., The authors demonstrate a sensing approach for effectively monitoring organic micropollutants in water. They first use mesoporous nanosponge and magnetic nanoparticles for fast enrichment of micropollutants, and demonstrate SERS-based sensing with 2-3 orders of magnitude improvement in detection limits.

The scalable synthesis and transfer of large-area graphene underpins the development of nanoscale photonic devices ideal for new applications in a variety of fields, ranging from biotechnology, to wearable sensors for healthcare and motion detection, to quantum transport, communications, and metrology. The formation of Rb5Ag1/3Zr5/3(MoO4)6 compound during the study of Rb2MoO4-Ag2MoO4-Zr(MoO4)2 system by x-ray diffraction technique was established. Its unit cell parameters, phase transition were determined. The dimensions of trigonal unit cell Rb5Ag1/3Zr5/3(MoO4)6 are a = 10.7235 (3), c = 38.548 (1), V = 3838.9 (3). Temperature and frequency dependences of dielectric parameters for Rb5M1/3Zr5/3(MoO4)6 (M-Ag, Na) ceramics were measured by impedance spectroscopy in the temperature and the frequency range 300-773 K and 1 Hz-10 kHz, respectively. The correlation of dielectric and thermal parameters in the high-temperature region near the phase transition was revealed. Arrhenius plots of the conductivity showed anomalies at high temperatures (723-773 K), increasing several orders of magnitude to 10−3 S K/cm.

The development of low-cost impedance spectroscopy devices is limited by the capabilities of low-cost hardware. Impedance spectroscopy requires high accuracy over a large bandwidth and dynamic range for most applications. In this paper, back-end signal processing solutions are examined and implemented to improve both the bandwidth and dynamic range of a typical low-cost impedance analyser without modifying the hardware. The bandwidth is improved by undersampling the input waveforms and reconstructing the signals based on the known frequency information. The bandwidth can be increased by multiple orders of magnitude and the limiting factor of the system becomes amplifier bandwidth and the Analog-to-Digital Converter (ADC) sample-and-hold circuit. Despite allowing signals to become orders of magnitude larger than the ADC range, the original signal can be reconstructed based on the measured saturated signal. This saturation technique more than doubles the dynamic range for any given accuracy requirement.

As an emerging member of the colloidal semiconductor quantum dot materials family, intraband quantum dots are being extensively studied for thermal infrared sensing applications. High-performance detectors can be realized using a traditional p-n junction device design; however, the heavily doped nature of intraband quantum dots presents a new challenge in realizing diode devices. In this work, we utilize a trait uniquely available in a colloidal quantum dot material system to overcome this challenge: the ability to blend two different types of quantum dots to control the electrical property of the resulting film. We report on the preparation of binary mixture films containing midwavelength infrared Ag2Se intraband quantum dots and the fabrication of p-n heterojunction diodes with strong rectifying characteristics. The peak specific detectivity at 4.5 μm was measured to be 107 Jones at room temperature, which is an orders of magnitude improvement compared to the previous generation of intraband quantum dot detectors.

Coupling a semiconductor with an electrical insulator in a single amphiphilic nanoparticle could open new pathways for manufacturing and assembling organic electronic devices. Here, a poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene)/polyaniline (PEDOT/PANI) bilayer is confined on the surface of one lobe of snowman-type Janus nanoparticles (JNPs), such that one lobe is semiconducting and the other is electrically insulating. The PEDOT/PANI bilayer is constructed in two synthesis steps, by asymmetric modification of the JNPs with PANI followed by PEDOT. The addition of the PEDOT layer onto the PANI-modified JNPs leads to an enhancement in the conductivity of up to 2 orders of magnitude. Further, we demonstrate that JNPs are very versatile supports for semiconducting polymers because by tuning their size and geometry the overall conductivity of the JNP powders can be modulated within several orders of magnitude.

In this work, we study thickness down-scaling as a technique to miniaturize piezoelectric ultrasound transducers while preserving a frequency of operation that falls in the 40–100 kHz range, where airborne ultrasound can propagate over several meters distances and attenuation is $100\,\,\mu \text{m}\,\,\times 100\,\,\mu \text{m}$ . We compare this performance to the sensitivities of ultrasound sensors recently published in literature, showing an increase in Rx sensitivity per unit area between 1 and 2 orders of magnitude. This paper proposes a novel flexible tactile sensor array for dynamic triaxial force measurement. Piezoresistive nanofibers, which are fabricated via the electrospinning method and are composed of multi-wall carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) and thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU), are selected as the sensing material. The sensitive piezoresistive layer, which has micron-scale thickness, is wrapped in polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) with a bumped surface. This structure not only detects triaxial forces of different magnitudes and frequencies, but also can recognize the shape, size, and curvature of external objects using multiple measuring points of the sensor. When the sensor is subjected to normal forces at different frequencies, the measuring voltage shows good responses with variations of less than 1.21 %. When the sensor is subjected to shear forces, the coefficient of variation is less than 2.05%. In addition, when the sensor is stressed at multiple measuring points, the voltage response errors between the different points are less than 5.29%. The sensor shows high sensitivity (with a resistance change that can reach four orders of magnitude) and high response-speeds (response within 62 ms) in validation experiments. The proposed flexible sensor is efficient in triaxial force detection and has the potential for application to prosthetic hands and wearable devices.

We have developed a machine learning-based crystal plasticity surrogate model (CP-SM) that can directly learn highly nonlinear material behavior during plastic deformation. CP-SM provides fast inference of spatially resolved three-dimensional (3D) microstructure and micromechanical fields and their evolution during plastic deformation, predicting the 22-dimensional material characteristics including a four-dimensional (4D) quaternion-based representation of crystal orientation, six-dimensional (6D) elastic and plastic strain tensors, and 6D stress at each location in the 3D structure. The predictions from CP-SM are orders of magnitude faster than and show good agreement with the deformation fields predicted by performing direct numerical simulations using spectral solvers. The fidelity of the CP-SM is further tested by assessing how well physics-based constraints are satisfied by the predicted 3D fields. We demonstrate our results on numerical simulations of uniaxially loaded copper.

In terahertz (THz) technologies, generation and manipulation of THz waves are two key processes usually implemented by different device modules. Integrating THz generation and manipulation into a single compact device will advance the applications of THz technologies in various fields. Here, we demonstrate a hybrid nonlinear plasmonic metasurface incorporating an epsilon-near-zero (ENZ) indium tin oxide (ITO) layer to seamlessly combine efficient generation and manipulation of THz waves across a wide frequency band. The coupling between the plasmonic resonance of the metasurface and the ENZ mode of the ITO thin film enhances the THz conversion efficiency by more than 4 orders of magnitude. Meanwhile, such a hybrid device is capable of shaping the polarization and wavefront of the emitted THz beam via the engineered nonlinear Pancharatnam-Berry (PB) phases of the plasmonic meta-atoms. The presented hybrid nonlinear metasurface opens a new avenue toward miniaturized integrated THz devices and systems with advanced functionalities.

Electronic microdevices of self-bending coronene crystals are developed to reveal an unexplored link between mechanical deformation and crystal function. First, a facile approach towards length/width/curvature-controllable micro-crystals through bottom-up solution crystallization was proposed for high processability and stability. The bending crystal devices show a significant increase beyond seven orders of magnitude in conductivity than the straight ones, providing the first example of deformation-induced function enhancement in crystal materials. Besides, double effects caused by bending, including the change of π electron level as well as the enhancement of carrier mobility, were determined, respectively by the X-ray photoelectric spectroscopy and X-ray crystallography to coexist, contributing to the conductivity improvement. Our findings will promote future creation of flexible organic crystal systems with deformation-enhanced functional features towards customized smart devices.

Summary Advanced conductors are indispensable circuit elements in modern electronics with unique responses to environmental variations. This work successfully introduces the intriguing polymer relaxation into conductive materials and creates a special rheological conductor (RhC) from liquid metal (LM)-polymer composites. The electrical transition temperatures of RhC are found to be highly consistent with polymer rheological transition temperatures (Tg and Tf). Similar to the time-temperature superposition of polymers, a master curve can be constructed to effectively predict the conductivity of RhC. Further polymer rheological experiments and theoretical analysis successfully demonstrate the relationship between conductance and polymer chain relaxation. The RhC could realize several orders of magnitude change in resistance via temperature/time regulation. The polymer chain dynamics provide multiple resistive responses of RhC to temperature, time, and voltage that are remarkably different from traditional conductors. This work pioneers a new route to re-consider flexible conductors and provides diverse applications in high-tech devices.

A model water-filled porous medium is investigated using NMR techniques, and the results of these measurements are interpreted theoretically. A rigorous theoretical description of the near-surface layer, qualitatively introduced when interpreting the NMR data for porous materials, is formulated. Our results indicate that the thickness of the near-surface layer exceeds that quoted in the literature by several orders of magnitude. This result allows to obtain valuable information about the processes at the liquid-solid interface.

This paper proposes a new structure named a Side Contact lateral Doping Field Effect Diode (SLFED) to overcome the short channel effects of a regular field effect diode (FED). The fabrication of this new structure is simple that can be fabricated by the standard CMOS process technology, and it offers good electrical characteristics. Furthermore, a comprehensive analysis of FEDs has presented. Our results show that the calculated Ion/Ioff ratio is several orders of magnitude larger than of the regular FED. For simulating the structures, we have applied semiconductor device simulation tools.

Measuring the maximum operating temperature within the channel of ultrawide band-gap transistors is critically important since the temperature dependence of the device reliability sets operational limits such as maximum operational power. Thermoreflectance imaging (TTI) is an optimal choice to measure the junction temperature due to its submicrometer spatial resolution and submicrosecond temporal resolution. Since TTI is an imaging technique, data acquisition is orders of magnitude faster than point measurement techniques such as Raman thermometry. Unfortunately, commercially available LED light sources used in thermoreflectance systems are limited to energies less than ∼3.9 eV, which is below the band gap of many ultrawide band-gap semiconductors (>4.0 eV). Therefore, the semiconductors are transparent to the probing light sources, prohibiting the application of TTI. To address this thermal imaging challenge, we utilize an MoS2 coating as a thermoreflectance enhancement coating that allows for the measurement of the surface temperature of (ultra)wide band-gap materials. The coating consists of a network of MoS2 nanoflakes with the c axis aligned normal to the surface and is easily removable via sonication. The method is validated using electrical and thermal characterization of GaN and AlGaN devices. We demonstrate that this coating does not measurably influence the electrical performance or the measured operating temperature. A maximum temperature rise of 49 K at 0.59 W was measured within the channel of the AlGaN device, which is over double the maximum temperature rise obtained by measuring the thermoreflectance of the gate metal. The importance of accurately measuring the peak operational temperature is discussed in the context of accelerated stress testing.

Thermoelectric materials have been widely explored for the potential applications in power generation and refrigeration fields. High thermal conductivity (∼500 W/m K) of single-crystal FeSb2 limits the application in cryogenic cooling. In this work, the FeSb2 single crystal has been synthesized by the self-flux method. The rocking curve results reveal that the single crystal possesses quite high crystallinity. The micromorphology image shows that the single crystal is pyknotic without observable pores or cracks. Surprisingly, the thermal conductivity is reduced by 2 orders of magnitude compared with the previous reports, which can be attributed to the enhanced phonon scattering by the defects and impurities. Furthermore, the magnetic field can further suppress the thermal transport by reducing the phonon mean-free path. The maximum suppression rate of the thermal conductivity reaches 14% at 60 K when the magnetic field varies from 0 to 9 T. In this work, we have prepared the FeSb2 single crystal with low thermal conductivity, and the magneto-suppressed thermal transport strategy can be applied to other thermoelectric materials.

Collective behavior widely exists in nature, ranging from the macroscopic cloud of swallows to the microscopic cloud of colloidal particles. The behavior of an individual inside the collective is distinctive from its behavior alone, as it follows its neighbors. The introduction of such collective behavior in two-dimensional (2D) materials may offer new degrees of freedom to achieve desired but unattained properties. Here, we report a highly sensitive magneto-optic effect and transmissive magneto-coloration via introduction of collective behavior into magnetic 2D material dispersions. The increase of ionic strength in the dispersion enhances the collective behavior of colloidal particles, giving rise to a magneto-optic Cotton-Mouton coefficient up to 2700 T-2 m-1 which is the highest value obtained so far, being 3 orders of magnitude larger than other known transparent media. We also reveal linear dependence of magneto-coloration on the concentration and hydration ratios of ions. Such linear dependence and the extremely large Cotton-Mouton coefficient cooperatively allow fabrication of giant magneto-birefringent devices for color-centered visual sensing.

High atomic diffusivity in metals enables substantial tuneability of their structure and properties by tailoring the diffusional processes, but this causes their customized properties to be unstable at elevated temperatures. Eliminating diffusive interfaces by fabricating single crystals or heavily alloying helps to address this issue but does not inhibit atomic diffusion at high homologous temperatures. We discovered that the Schwarz crystal structure was effective at suppressing atomic diffusion in a supersaturated aluminum-magnesium alloy with extremely fine grains. By forming these stable structures, diffusion-controlled intermetallic precipitation from the nanosized grains and their coarsening were inhibited up to the equilibrium melting temperature, around which the apparent across-boundary diffusivity was reduced by about seven orders of magnitude. Developing advanced engineering alloys using the Schwarz crystal structure may lead to useful properties for high-temperature applications.

129Xe NMR has been proven to be a powerful tool to investigate the structure of porous materials. Xenon is a monatomic noble gas which could be used as a probe due to the extremely sensitive to its local environment. Optical pumping techniques for production of hyperpolarized (HP) xenon have led to an increase of sensitivity up to orders of magnitude compared with traditional 129Xe NMR. This review summarizes the application of this technique in porous materials and heterogeneous catalysis in recent ten years, involving of zeolites, metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), catalytic process and kinetics.

Ultraviolet photodetectors have several critical applications in communications, early missile launch detection, pollution monitoring, and bacterial fluorescence detection. Wide-bandgap metal oxide semiconductors have proven to be high performance ultraviolet photodetectors with some photoresponsivities reaching several orders of magnitude greater than solid state commercial devices and even photomultiplier tubes. However, analysis and design of metal-oxide photodetectors is complicated by oxygen adsorption and photodesorption at the surface. A limited understanding of this adsorption phenomenon hinders the development of new UV photodetectors. This paper clarifies the adsorption and photodesorption process and makes analysis of metal-oxide photoconductors tractable. Several models of oxygen adsorption, oxygen desorption, and adsorption-controlled conduction from across disciplines are summarized. We discuss each model’s use in their intended context, implications for design, fitting parameters, and limitations. We conclude with an argument that current models are insufficient for describing high-gain metal oxide ultraviolet photodetectors, and we outline the requirements for a new model suitable for high-gain sensors.

This article discusses the absence of methods for measuring low-frequency (LF) fluctuation processes at high temperatures and proposes an original bridge method for measuring the spectra of LF current fluctuations in the tungsten filaments of electric lamps in the controlled temperature range 300–2700 K. The application of the bridge measurement circuit reduces the influence of degradation processes in the filament and the power source’s own noise on the measurement results by several orders of magnitude. A spectral analysis of LF current fluctuations is performed in the frequency range 1.5·10–5–5·10–1 Hz using an automated unit based on a personal computer under the control of specially developed software.

Terahertz radiation has become an important diagnostic tool in the development of new technologies. However, the diffraction limit prevents terahertz radiation (λ ≈ 0.01–3 mm) from being focused to the nanometre length scale of modern devices. In response to this challenge, terahertz scanning probe microscopy techniques based on coupling terahertz radiation to subwavelength probes such as sharp tips have been developed. These probes enhance and confine the light, improving the spatial resolution of terahertz experiments by up to six orders of magnitude. In this Review, we survey terahertz scanning probe microscopy techniques that achieve spatial resolution on the scale of micrometres to angstroms, with particular emphasis on their overarching approaches and underlying probing mechanisms. Finally, we forecast the next steps in the field. Recent progress in terahertz scanning probe microscopy is reviewed with an emphasis on techniques that access length scales below 100 nm relevant to material science. An outlook on the future of nanoscale terahertz scanning probe microscopy is also provided.

The EMDrive is a proposed propellantless propulsion concept claiming to be many orders of magnitude more efficient than classical radiation pressure forces. It is based on microwaves, which are injected into a closed tapered cavity, producing a unidirectional thrust with values of at least 1 mN/kW. This was met with high scepticism going against basic conservation laws and classical mechanics. However, several tests and theories appeared in the literature supporting this concept. Measuring a thruster with a significant thermal and mechanical load as well as high electric currents, such as those required to operate a microwave amplifier, can create numerous artefacts that produce false-positive thrust values. After many iterations, we developed an inverted counterbalanced double pendulum thrust balance, where the thruster can be mounted on a bearing below its suspension point to eliminate most thermal drift effects. In addition, the EMDrive was self-powered by a battery-pack to remove undesired interactions due to feedthroughs. We found no thrust values within a wide frequency band including several resonance frequencies and different modes. Our data limit any anomalous thrust to below the force equivalent from classical radiation for a given amount of power. This provides strong limits to all proposed theories and rules out previous test results by at least two orders of magnitude.

In this work, a novel triad nanocomposites containing trititanate nanotubes, Ag nanoparticles and dopamine were prepared and the SERS properties were measured experimentally. Control over the size and position of the Ag nanoparticles in the TiNT-dop-Ag system, along with the localised surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) of the Ag particles matching the Raman excitation wavelength, gives a SERS enhancement greater than 6 orders of magnitude. Electromagnetic modelling was used to provide a theoretical basis for these results.

The structuring of liquid-liquid and liquid-air interfaces may play an important role in novel microfabrication platforms and biotechnologies, from the spontaneous formation of microfilaments from liquid droplets and the 3D printing of liquids, to the culture of stem cells on emulsions. Understanding the mechanical anisotropy of associated liquid interfaces is essential for the development of such systems. Models of AFM indentation at liquid interfaces, based on the Young-Laplace model, currently do not allow the quantification of interfacial mechanical properties of associated molecular films. This report presents such a model and compares its predictions to interfacial mechanical properties characterised via interfacial shear rheology. An extreme reversal of mechanical anisotropy of liquid-liquid interfaces is observed, upon self-assembly of protein nanosheets, by 5 orders of magnitude. Results indicate that, although interfacial rheology is more sensitive than AFM indentation to the mechanics of molecular films in the low range of interfacial mechanics, AFM indentation allows the quantification of mechanical properties of stiffer molecular films, and remains better adapted to the characterisation of small samples and enables the characterisation of local heterogeneity.

Practical application of surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) is greatly limited by the inaccurate quantitative analyses due to the measuring parameter's fluctuations induced by different operators, different Raman spectrometers, and different test sites and moments, especially during the field tests. Herein, we develop a strategy of quantitative SERS for field detection via designing structurally homogeneous and ordered Ag-coated Si nanocone arrays. Such an array is fabricated as SERS chips by depositing Ag on the template etching-induced Si nanocone array. Taking 4-aminothiophenol as the typical analyte, the influences of fluctuations in measuring parameters (such as defocusing depth and laser powers) on Raman signals are systematically studied, which significantly change SERS measurements. It has been shown that the silicon underneath the Ag coating in the chip can respond to the measuring parameters' fluctuations synchronously with and similar to the analyte adsorbed on the chip surface, and the normalization with Si Raman signals can well eliminate the big fluctuations (up to 1 or 2 orders of magnitude) in measurements, achieving highly reproducible measurements (mostly

Since the first experimental observation of optical Airy beams, various applications ranging from particle and cell micromanipulation to laser micromachining have exploited their non-diffracting and accelerating properties. The later discovery that Airy beams can self-heal after being blocked by an obstacle further proved their robustness to propagate under scattering and disordered environment. Here, we report the generation of Airy beams on an integrated silicon photonic chip and demonstrate that the on-chip 1D Airy beams preserve the same properties as the 2D beams. The 1D meta-optics used to create the Airy beam has the size of only 3 by 16 microns, at least three orders of magnitude smaller than the conventional optic. The on-chip self-healing beams demonstrated here could potentially enable diffraction-free light routing for on-chip optical networks and high-precision micromanipulation of bio-molecules on an integrated photonic chip.

Due to the inhibiting behavior of Cu, NiCu alloys represent an interesting candidate in carburizing atmospheres. However, manufacturing by conventional casting is limited. It is important to know whether the corrosion behavior of conventionally and additively manufactured parts differ. Samples of binary NiCu alloys and Monel Alloy 400 were generated by laser powder bed fusion (LPBF) and exposed to a carburizing atmosphere (20 vol% CO–20% H2–1% H2O–8% CO2–51% Ar) at 620 °C and 18 bar for 960 h. Powders and printed samples were investigated using several analytic techniques such as EPMA, SEM, and roughness measurement. Grinding of the material after building (P1200 grit surface finish) generally reduced the metal dusting attack. Comparing the different compositions, a much lower attack was found in the case of the binary model alloys, whereas the technical Monel Alloy 400 showed a four orders of magnitude higher mass loss during exposure despite its Cu content of more than 30 wt%.

Photonic structures with optical resonances beyond a single controllable mode are strongly desired for enhancing light–matter interactions and bringing about advanced photonic devices. However, the realization of effective multimodal photonic structures has been restricted by the limited tunable range of mode manipulation, the spatial dispersions of electric fields or the polarization-dependent excitations. To overcome these limitations, we create a dual-mode metasurface by integrating the plasmonic surface lattice resonance and the gap plasmonic modes; this metasurface offers a widely tunable spectral range, good overlap in the spatial distribution of electric fields, and polarization independence of excitation light. To show that such dual-mode metasurfaces are versatile platforms for enhancing light–matter interactions, we experimentally demonstrate a significant enhancement of second-harmonic generation using our design, with a conversion efficiency of 1–3 orders of magnitude larger than those previously obtained in plasmonic systems. These results may inspire new designs for functional multimodal photonic structures.

In this work, we investigate the dynamics of ion motion in “doubly-polymerized” ionic liquids (DPILs) in which both charged species of an ionic liquid are covalently linked to the same polymer chains. Broadband dielectric spectroscopy is used to characterize these materials over a broad frequency and temperature range, and their behavior is compared to that of conventional “singly-polymerized” ionic liquids (SPILs) in which only one of the charged species is attached to the polymer chains. Polymerization of the DPIL decreases the bulk ionic conductivity by four orders of magnitude relative to both SPILs. The timescales for local ionic rearrangement are similarly found to be approximately four orders of magnitude slower in the DPILs than in the SPILs, and the DPILs also have a lower static dielectric constant. These results suggest that copolymerization of the ionic monomers affects ion motion on both the bulk and the local scales, with ion pairs serving to form strong physical crosslinks between the polymer chains. This study provides quantitative insight into the energetics and timescales of ion motion that drive the phenomenon of “ion locking” currently under investigation for new classes of organic electronics.

The theoretical Shockley-Queisser limit of photon-electricity conversion in a conventional p-n junction could be potentially overcome by the bulk photovoltaic effect that uniquely occurs in non-centrosymmetric materials. Using strain-gradient engineering, the flexo-photovoltaic effect, that is, the strain-gradient-induced bulk photovoltaic effect, can be activated in centrosymmetric semiconductors, considerably expanding material choices for future sensing and energy applications. Here we report an experimental demonstration of the flexo-photovoltaic effect in an archetypal two-dimensional material, MoS2, by using a strain-gradient engineering approach based on the structural inhomogeneity and phase transition of a hybrid system consisting of MoS2 and VO2. The experimental bulk photovoltaic coefficient in MoS2 is orders of magnitude higher than that in most non-centrosymmetric materials. Our findings unveil the fundamental relation between the flexo-photovoltaic effect and a strain gradient in low-dimensional materials, which could potentially inspire the exploration of new optoelectronic phenomena in strain-gradient-engineered materials.

Achieving high spinning speed is critical to the production efficiency and viable application of fiber species. Graphene fiber (GF) has recently emerged as a carbonaceous fiber with excellent functionality. However, the extremely low wet spinning speed of GF has limited its applications. We realized high-speed blow spinning of neat GF and fabric by modulating the rheological properties of the graphene oxide (GO) dispersion. We achieved a speed of 556 m min-1, 2 orders of magnitude faster than that for wet spinning. We chose ultrahigh molecular weight polymers as transient additives to circumvent the intrinsic barrier effect of GO and achieve high spinning dope stretchability at low polymer percentages-down to 25 wt %. Minimizing the polymer additive content ensures the high electrical/thermal conductivity of the blow-spun fiber and fabric. This work provides insight into the unique flow properties of 2D sheets and will promote the efficient production of graphene-based fibrous materials.

Optical tweezers enable the manipulation of micro- and nanodielectric particles through entrapment using a tightly focused laser. Generally, optical trapping of submicron size particles requires high-intensity light in the order of MW/cm2. Here, we demonstrate a technique of stable optical trapping of submicron polymeric beads on nanostructured titanium surfaces (black-Ti) without the use of lasers. Fluorescent polystyrene beads with a diameter d = 20-500 nm were successfully trapped on black-Ti by low-intensity focused illumination of incoherent light at λ = 370 m from a Hg lamp. Light intensity was 5.5 W/cm2, corresponding to a reduced light intensity of 6 orders of magnitude. Upon switching off illumination, trapped particles were released from the illuminated area, indicating that trapping was optically driven and reversible. Such trapping behavior was not observed on nonstructured Ti surfaces or on nanostructured silicon surfaces. Thus, the Ti nanostructures were demonstrated to play a key role.

Acoustic handling of nanoparticles in resonating acoustofluidic devices is often impeded by the presence of acoustic streaming. For micrometer-sized acoustic chambers, this acoustic streaming is typically driven from the fluid-solid interface by viscous shear-stresses generated by the acoustic actuation. AC electroosmosis is another boundary-driven streaming phenomena routinely used in microfluidic devices for handling of particle suspensions in electrolytes. Here, we study how streaming can be suppressed by combining ultrasound acoustics and AC electroosmosis. Based on a theoretical analysis of the electrokinetic problem, we are able to compute numerically a form of the electrical potential at the fluid-solid interface, which is suitable for suppressing a typical acoustic streaming pattern associated with a standing acoustic half-wave. In the linear regime, we even derive an analytical expression for the electroosmotic slip velocity at the fluid-solid interface, and use this as a guiding principle for developing models in the experimentally more relevant nonlinear regime that occurs at elevated driving voltages. We present simulation results for an acoustofluidic device, showing how implementing a suitable AC electroosmosis results in a suppression of the resulting streaming in the bulk of the device by two orders of magnitude., Comment: 12 pages, 8 pdf figures, compiled using JASAnew.cls

Magnetic tunnel junction with a large tunneling magnetoresistance has attracted great attention due to its importance in the spintronics applications. By performing extensive density functional theory calculations combined with the nonequilibrium Green's function method, we explore the spin-dependent transport properties of a magnetic tunnel junction, in which a non-polar SrTiO$_{3}$ barrier layer is sandwiched between two Heusler alloy Co$_{2}$MnSi electrodes. Theoretical results clearly reveal that the near perfect spin-filtering effect appears in the parallel magnetization configuration. The transmission coefficient in the parallel magnetization configuration at the Fermi level is several orders of magnitude larger than that in the antiparallel magnetization configuration, resulting in a huge tunneling magnetoresistance (i.e. $>10^6$), which originates from the coherent spin-polarized tunneling, due to the half-metallic nature of Co$_{2}$MnSi electrodes and the significant spin-polarization of the interfacial Ti 3d orbital.

Ceramic piezoelectric materials have orders of magnitude higher piezoelectric coefficients compared to polymers. However, their brittleness precludes imposition of large strains in mechanical energy harvesting applications. We report here that ice templating affords low bulk modulus lead-free aerogel piezoelectric nanogenerators (PENG) with unprecedented combination of flexibility and high piezoelectric response (voltage and power density). A modified ice templating protocol was used to fabricate piezoelectric nanocomposites of surface modified BaTiO3 (BTO) nanoparticles in crosslinked polyethylene imine. This protocol allowed incorporating a significantly high fraction of BTO particles (up to 83 wt %) in the aerogel, while retaining remarkably high compressibility and elastic recovery up to 80% strain. The output voltage, at an applied compressive force of 20 N (100 kPa), increased with BTO loading and a maximum output voltage of 11.6 V and power density of 7.22 μW/cm2 (49.79 μW/cm3) was obtained for PENG aerogels containing 83 wt% BTO, which is orders of magnitude higher than previously reported values for foam-based piezoelectric energy harvesters. The BTO/PEI PENGs also showed cyclic stability over 900 cycles of deformation. PENGs with higher porosity showed better elastic recovery and piezoelectric properties than lower porosity and higher BTO content aerogels. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first report to demonstrate the piezoelectric properties of high ceramic content aerogels having very high compressibility and elastic recovery.

By continuously varying the structure of graphene oxide paper (PRGP) using Joule heating annealing, we are able to tune its electrical conductivity (σ) and thermal diffusivity (α) in a very wide range: more than three orders of magnitude for σ (186–503009 S/m) and 10-fold for α (8.31 × 10−7 m2/s to 9.31 × 10−6 m2/s). Excellent coherency-linear relationship between σ and α is discovered although they are sustained by different carriers: electrons and phonons. Such coherency exists over two sections: σ > 2 × 104 S/m, and 103

In plasmon-mediated photocatalysis it is of critical importance to differentiate light-induced catalytic reaction rate enhancement channels, which include near-field effects, direct hot carrier injection, and photothermal catalyst heating. In particular, the discrimination of photothermal and hot electron channels is experimentally challenging, and their role is under keen debate. Here we demonstrate using the example of CO oxidation over nanofabricated neat Pd and Au50Pd50 alloy catalysts, how photothermal rate enhancement differs by up to 3 orders of magnitude for the same photon flux, and how this effect is controlled solely by the position of catalyst operation along the light-off curve measured in the dark. This highlights that small fluctuations in reactor temperature or temperature gradients across a sample may dramatically impact global and local photothermal rate enhancement, respectively, and thus control both the balance between different rate enhancement mechanisms and the way strategies to efficiently distinguish between them should be devised.

Graphene-based structures have found widespread applications in the fabrication of superior composite materials, conductors, and sensors owing to their excellent properties. Molecular dynamics (MD) simulation is often used to gain an in-depth understanding of the mechanical behaviors of those structures. However, MD simulation of mesoscale graphene structures faces great challenges due to its limited model size or high computation cost. In this work, we proposed a multilayer coarse-grained (CG) MD model which coarsens graphene layers in both planar and thickness directions. We systematically investigated the effect of coarse-graining on simulation accuracy in the CG-MD model. The optimal coarse-graining parameters for simulating the mechanical behaviors of graphene in tension, shearing, adhesion, bending, and self-folding were obtained. Our optimal CG-MD model enabled the simulation of relatively large-scale graphene structure with 1 ∼ 2 orders of magnitude increase in length and 3 ∼ 4 orders of magnitude reduction in computational time compared with the all-atom (AA) model, offering a valuable tool for designing and exploring graphene-based novel materials.
